White Enso – Series

The circle arrives as light on a black ground, and each one is split by a vertical fissure that rises to a spike above the ring and descends through dark terrain below. The gesture is intact in every image and resolves differently in each: thin and cloudlike, hard-edged, warm, granular, or nearly smooth. What repeats is not the mark but the interruption.

A luminous circle floats on black, its thin bright rim enclosing a smoky grey interior streaked like cloud. A ragged vein of white light runs from a spike above the circle straight down through its center and past the lower edge, breaking apart over a jagged black landmass. A second, larger arc grazes the bottom of the frame.

A ring of light, brightest along its left curve, encloses an interior divided into a pale left half and a shadowed right. A white channel descends from a spur at the top, through the middle, to a black horizon where several bare branching trees stand in silhouette at the left. The surrounding black is soft-edged, thinning to grey at the upper corners.

A dark sphere ringed in light, its surface mottled like weather, glows against banked grey cloud at the left. A pale column falls from above the circle down to a black horizon of stepped angular forms that suggest rooftops and a chimney, then continues through them to the bottom edge. The tonal range is wide and atmospheric, closer to photography than to drawing.

A cleanly drawn circle divides vertically into a pale grey left and a darker right, with a soft black blot near the upper right of the rim. A granular spike of white rises from the crown; below, a fine thread descends into a broad grey field edged with black cloud-like forms along the bottom. The surfaces are smooth and almost airbrushed, with little visible grain.

Rendered in warm sepia. A thin bright ring encloses a smooth pale interior, crossed by a thick crusted column of white that breaks into segments as it falls, with a small bright flare drifting to its right. Below, the column meets a silhouetted range of rocky peaks and continues to the lower edge. The corners darken into vignette.
